Rafael Benítez joins Everton as Manager
Rafael Benitez joins Everton as manager after signing a three-year deal with the team. The new addition to the English club stated that he believes the club is going places. He wants to be part of the team and help it achieve its ambitions.
This change comes after Carlo Ancelotti decided to return, in early June, to Real Madrid.
The last time that Benitez managed a club in the Premier League was the Newcastle United, a team that he left in June 2019. He then coached the Dalian Professional FC, in China, and left 18 months later. He has also coached Liverpool and Chelsea.
This is a historical change, as he’s one of the two managers to ever coach both Liverpool and Everton, long-time opponents. The first one was William Edward Barclay.
Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s biggest shareholder stated that Benitez impressed them because of his experience but mostly, his passion and interest to be a part of the club.

However, despite all the nice words that the administration has given, Rafael Benítez joins Everton as a manager in a moment where there has been a lot of controversy around the change. Outside Goodison Park, several banners saying “We Know Where You Live – Don’t Sign”. The Merseyside Police is currently investigating these.
Additionally, before signing, while still being part of Liverpool, Benitez called Everton a “small club”. He later stated that he made a mistake. However, it seems like these comments have not been forgotten by fans.
Benitez is no stranger to hostile work environments. He took over Chelsea’s interim manager position, in 2012, following a very strong rivalry when he was part of Liverpool.

Everton Football Club is a team from Liverpool, Merseyside. They have a history of 118 seasons as part of the Premier League, more than any other English team. They have 29 champion titles, making them the fourth team with the most won leagues.
